World Peace Café (Vegetarian Food) by SamT

With the overwhelming stress at work, one might need a quick break, with a light, non-meaty, serene lunch. I found this wonderful place at Jalan Irrawadi that can cater to what an office personnel needs most during lunch hours - the “World Peace Café”. This café is kinda hidden as it is not that noticeable. It is 2 houses from Harvest Inn if you were to drive in from Burma Road.

The World Peace Café has no signboard but merely goes by the name of Vajrapani Meditation Centre. Curious? Yes, it is also a meditation centre, in association with Buddhism. Forget about the religious things, anyone can just step in just to enjoy the cool ambiance and nice lunch to unwind and recharge for the later half of the day at work.

The setting of the café is very simple and the ambiance portrays its serenity. The dining furnitures are the typical old fashioned bamboo sets and the café is surrounded with the echo of soothing meditation music. Nothing fancy, just a place where you can find peace after the whole morning of meetings where tons of action items are being recorded.

I also noticed that on the side of the window pane, there were some plants that were actually for sales. Near to the food corner, a cabinet of ornaments like candles, books and accessories were meant for buyers. I believe this is a non profit kind of café where the earnings are for charity purposes.

The food served there is of buffet style, all 8 main dishes of full vegetarian, lining up colorfully on the table. There were asam curry, toufu, brinjal (egg plants), perut ikan and fried vegetable in a simple style; across the main dishes table, there was a corner that served asam laksa. The food tends to change from day to day but repetitively from week to week the aroma of food really fills up the air and interestingly, I was impressed by the food in this small and quaint little café.

I took the asam laksa and perut ikan, they were really fantastic. I had 2 bowls of perut ikan and believe it or not, the taste was exactly the same as those “non-vegetarian”. They were also pappadum to go with the asam curry. Brown rice was also served for those who preferred “less carbo” lunch. Not forgetting the desert, the vegetarian cake was not too bad and worth a try. Overall, the food there was simple and yet, tasty.

The price for this meal only costs MYR8.50 per head, reasonably cheap; especially in such a serene environment; where food is good plus some contribution to charity.

To all my readers, especially the office personnels, try it and I would bet that you will like it.
