Do you believe “craving for food” will make you search through all the possible way to get it? Actually, this is a good topic to discuss upon in shortnslippers.blogspot on “how one handles his or her carving?” Well, will start something about that later…
After my proposal to have dinner with Gneb and Leng tonight did not come true. I went home, a little disappointed but still manage to plan for what to have for the night. Followed by a short call with another friend of mine, mentioning about how kind his neighbor was, sharing the home made Sushi and some exotic Japanese dishes; suddenly, I was so craving for Japanese food. I was trying to think of some other thing but still I knew deep inside, only Japanese cuisine would satisfy me tonight.

So, here it is; Sumida Japanese Restaurant in Prima Tanjung at Tanjung Tokong. This restaurant is not new in the neighborhood and has been there for quite a while. The owner of the restaurant is previously from Mutiara hotel at Batu Ferringghi. Nothing fancy on the outlook of this restaurant; situated at ground floor of the shop houses after Baskin Robbin if you were to come from Mount Eskine to Fettes Park.
Very typical Japanese style interior, with some simple wooden dining furniture and tatami platform; segregated with bamboo-ish blind as dividers. To further its exoticism, I chose to be seated at the platform.
The menu has quite a variety of choices and prices are fairly reasonable or what I would say, not too expensive. I believe all of you should know what price to expect to have foreign cuisine; it will definitely not be the price of “choo char” at the “kopitiam” or in a typical small scale Chinese restaurant.
3 of us ordered 3 different set each, as I was thinking it would be easier to settle with set rather than deciding on what is the best combination of dishes to have. Yosenabe set, which is basically a hot pot of soup with seafood, vegetables and glass noodles. If you are not a meet lover and prefer something plain, I would recommend this as it will not put on heavy duty to your taste bud. With other side dishes, cawamushi, miso soup, it can really be quite filling.
The price of MYR35 for this set is pretty much reasonable with 2 big prawns, 2 shelled scallops, one big piece of fish fillet, 2 bamboo shoots, big mushrooms, tofu etc. Not too bad.

Unagi/ Otsukuri Bento, the normal bento we can find in other Japanese restaurant. The only set back is that the grilled eel itself was not too big of a piece. Based on what I used to have across the Japanese restaurants in Penang, this one was not very much impressive. Taste wise, nothing special, just a normal grilled unagi and the price of MYR33 was somewhat ok if it was not due to the size of the eel served.
The Japanese curry chicken set came with rice and miso soup; suitable for those who favor the taste of curry but yet not spicy. The way of preparation was slightly different from other restaurants. The chicken was not fried to perfection then top with curry gravy. It was more on taking the chicken meat and cooked together with the curry sauce with a lot of onions. Both way of preparations mentioned suit me fine but if you are a fan of fired chicken, then, I would advise not to order this. Price wise, MYR18 is definitely not expensive and reasonable.
If you are one of the Japanese food cravers, this restaurant will not bring you much disappointment.
